Listed on Spamhaus DBL? How to get delisted

dbl.spamhaus.org

ProbeKit does not check this list automatically

Spamhaus’s public servers are free for non-commercial use only, so ProbeKit does not query Spamhaus automatically. In ProbeKit’s blacklist check this list shows as “Not checked” with a link to Spamhaus’s own checker, which you can open yourself.

What a listing means

The Spamhaus DBL lists domains, not IPs: domains seen in spam, phishing, malware or botnet control, and legitimate domains that were abused. Mail that links to a listed domain, or is sent from one, is filtered as spam by many receivers.

How removal works

Look the domain up on the Spamhaus checker (https://check.spamhaus.org/listed/?searchterm=<your domain>): it shows why the domain is listed. Fix the cause (a compromised site or form, an abused sender or sending provider, purchased lists), then request removal from the checker. If the cause is still there, the domain is listed again.

Spamhaus DBL lookup / removal

Before you request removal

  1. Confirm the listing with ProbeKit’s blacklist check and note every list that shows the IP or domain.
  2. Find the cause: compromised mailbox passwords, malware on a device, an open relay or open proxy, a misbehaving web form, or sending to purchased or stale lists.
  3. Fix it, and make sure the IP has a proper reverse DNS (PTR) name and that SPF, DKIM and DMARC pass for your mail.
  4. Use the list operator’s removal process. Requesting removal before fixing the cause usually gets the IP relisted.
  5. Re-check after a day, and add a blacklist monitor so you hear about the next listing before your users do.
