Listed on SURBL? How to get delisted
multi.surbl.org
What a listing means
SURBL lists domains, not IPs: domains that appear in the links of spam, phishing and malware messages. Mail filters check the domains a message links to against it, so a listed domain in your mail (or on your site) can get a message filtered even when the sending IP is clean. multi.surbl.org combines several SURBL lists in one query.
How removal works
Open SURBL’s data lookup (https://www.surbl.org/surbl-analysis) and enter the domain to see which list holds it and why. Fix the cause (a compromised site or form, a link shortener or tracking domain you do not control, purchased lists), then follow the removal steps SURBL shows for that list. If the cause is still there, the domain is listed again.
Before you request removal
- Confirm the listing with ProbeKit’s blacklist check and note every list that shows the IP or domain.
- Find the cause: compromised mailbox passwords, malware on a device, an open relay or open proxy, a misbehaving web form, or sending to purchased or stale lists.
- Fix it, and make sure the IP has a proper reverse DNS (PTR) name and that SPF, DKIM and DMARC pass for your mail.
- Use the list operator’s removal process. Requesting removal before fixing the cause usually gets the IP relisted.
- Re-check after a day, and add a blacklist monitor so you hear about the next listing before your users do.
