Intermedia 5.2.2: hosted Exchange mailbox full
554 5.2.2Intermedia hosted Exchange mailbox fullPermanent: retrying will not helpFrom Intermedia hosted Exchange
554 5.2.2 mailbox full; STOREDRV.Deliver.Exception:QuotaExceededException
What it means
A 5.2.2 is “Mailbox full” in RFC 3463. At Intermedia it typically reads like the standard Exchange quota message, with a QuotaExceededException after the code. The mailbox exists, but Exchange refuses to store more mail because it reached the quota set for that user’s plan.
Hosted Exchange plans come with a fixed mailbox size, and Intermedia lets admins see usage and change plans in HostPilot. Users who never delete mail, or who keep large attachments in Sent Items, hit the limit sooner than they expect.
The sender cannot fix this. A 554 is permanent, so the message is returned; once the recipient frees space, the sender has to resend.
Likely causes
- The recipient’s mailbox reached its plan’s storage limit.
- Large attachments in Sent Items or Deleted Items that were never emptied.
- An archiving setup that stopped moving older mail out of the mailbox.
How to fix it
- As the sender, tell the recipient by another channel and resend after they confirm space is free.
- As the mailbox user, empty Deleted Items, remove large attachments, and clear Sent Items.
- As the tenant admin, check mailbox usage in HostPilot and move the user to a plan with more storage if needed.
- Set up archiving so older mail moves out automatically, and warn users before they reach the limit.
Checks that apply
- MX Lookup Confirms the domain is hosted at Intermedia, so the admin knows where to check quotas.
- MailFlow Monitor Sends test mail after cleanup and confirms delivery works again.
FAQ
- Will my message arrive once they free space?
- No. This 554 returned it for good. Resend after the recipient clears space.
- Is this a temporary or permanent bounce?
- With a 554 or 550 it is permanent. Some systems send a 452 or 4.2.2 instead, which retries, but Exchange quota bounces are usually final.
