Fixing Yahoo "554 5.7.9 Message not accepted for policy reasons"
554 5.7.9 Message not accepted for policy reasons
Yahoo, AOL and Verizon Media addresses reject with:
554 5.7.9 Message not accepted for policy reasons. See https://postmaster.yahooinc.com/error-codes
Since February 2024, Yahoo enforces the same bulk-sender requirements as Google: authenticated mail (SPF and DKIM aligned under DMARC), one-click unsubscribe on marketing mail, and spam complaint rates kept under 0.3%.
Why it happens
Usually one of: no DMARC record at all, DKIM not aligned with the From: domain, missing List-Unsubscribe /List-Unsubscribe-Post headers on bulk mail, or a complaint rate that tipped past the threshold and triggered policy filtering.
Diagnose it
The compliance check below grades your domain against the shared Google/Yahoo rubric: SPF, DKIM, DMARC presence and policy, and the DNS-verifiable pieces of the bulk-sender rules — so you can see exactly which requirement is unmet.
Fix it
1. Publish DMARC (start at p=none with a rua= address, then move to quarantine).
2. Ensure DKIM signs with your From: domain and SPF authorizes the sending host — both must align.
3. Add RFC 8058 one-click unsubscribe to every marketing message.
4. Enroll in Yahoo's Complaint Feedback Loop and prune unengaged recipients to drop complaints.
