Gmail 550 5.2.1: the email account is disabled
550 5.2.1The email account is disabledPermanent: retrying will not helpFrom Gmail and Google Workspace
550-5.2.1 The email account that you tried to reach is disabled. - gsmtp
What it means
The address maps to a real Google account, but that account is not allowed to receive mail right now. Google returns 5.2.1 (mailbox disabled, per RFC 3463) so the sender knows the mailbox exists but is closed. The text usually reads like the example.
It is permanent for the message you sent. Whether future mail will work depends on why the account was disabled, which the sender cannot see. Compare with 5.1.1, where the account does not exist, and 4.2.1, where it exists but is temporarily receiving too much mail.
Likely causes
- A Workspace admin suspended the user, for example after the person left or during an investigation.
- Google suspended a personal account for a terms of service violation.
- A Workspace subscription lapsed or was suspended for billing, which disables mailboxes across the domain.
- The account was flagged as compromised and locked pending recovery.
How to fix it
- As a sender, contact the person another way (phone, a different address) and ask for a working address.
- As a Workspace admin, open Admin console, Directory, Users, find the user, and reactivate them or forward mail to a manager.
- If every user in the domain is affected, check the Billing section for a suspended subscription.
- For lists, treat repeated 5.2.1 responses as a hard bounce and suppress the address.
Checks that apply
- MX Lookup Confirms the domain uses Google for mail so you know the admin console is where the fix lives.
- Whois Lookup Helps a sender find who runs the recipient domain when the whole organisation seems affected.
FAQ
- Is a disabled account the same as a deleted one?
- No. Disabled accounts can be re-enabled and will receive again; deleted ones return 5.1.1.
- Should I keep retrying?
- No. Retrying will not help until the account owner or admin restores it.
