Gmail 550 5.1.1: email account does not exist

550 5.1.1The email account does not existPermanent: retrying will not helpFrom Gmail and Google Workspace

Example
550-5.1.1 The email account that you tried to reach does not exist. Please try double-checking the recipient’s email address for typos or unnecessary spaces. Learn more at https://support.google.com/mail/?p=NoSuchUser - gsmtp

What it means

Gmail checked the local part of the address against its user directory and found nothing. For a gmail.com address that means no such Google account. For a Google Workspace domain it means the organisation has no user, group, or alias with that name, and no catch-all routing picks it up. The response is permanent.

This is a hard bounce in the strictest sense. Repeated sends to addresses that return 5.1.1 hurt your reputation with Gmail, so mailing platforms should suppress them after the first bounce. If you see 5.2.1 instead, the account exists but is disabled, which is a different situation.

Likely causes

  • A typo in the address, such as a missing dot in a Workspace domain or a transposed letter in the user name.
  • The Workspace admin deleted or renamed the user after they left the organisation.
  • An old list containing addresses that were never valid, for example from a form without confirmation.
  • A personal Gmail account removed under Google’s inactive account policy.

How to fix it

  1. Read the address in the bounce character by character; Gmail ignores dots in gmail.com user names but not in the domain.
  2. If you are the sender, confirm the address through another channel before writing again.
  3. If you are the Workspace admin, check Admin console, Directory, Users, and recreate the user or add the address as an alias to a current user.
  4. For lists, mark the address as a hard bounce and stop sending to it.

Checks that apply

  • MX Lookup Confirms the recipient domain really routes to Google, so you know Gmail’s directory is the authority.
  • Email Header Analyzer Shows the exact recipient address the server tried, which reveals hidden spaces or encoding errors.

The classification runs without network lookups and we never store your paste.

FAQ

Can a deleted Gmail address be revived?
For Workspace, an admin can restore a deleted user within a limited window (about 20 days). A personal Gmail address cannot be reused by anyone once deleted.
Why did one email succeed and the next bounce with 5.1.1?
The account was probably removed in between. Workspace changes take effect almost immediately.
