Ping
Ping sends ICMP echo requests to a host and measures how long each reply takes and how many are lost. This test runs from ProbeKit’s server, so it shows whether a host answers from the internet, not just from your network.
When to use this: A server seems down or slow and you want to see whether it responds from outside your network. Command prefix ping:
About the Ping
Send ICMP echo requests from ProbeKit’s server and report round-trip times and packet loss.
FAQ
- The host does not answer ping. Is it down?
- Not necessarily. Many hosts and firewalls drop ICMP; try a TCP port test on a service port instead.
- What latency is good?
- It depends on distance: tens of milliseconds within a continent, 100–300 ms across oceans.
