Traceroute
Traceroute maps the path packets take to a host, listing each router on the way with its response time. This test runs from ProbeKit’s server and shows where along the path delay or loss begins.
When to use this: A host is slow or unreachable and you want to see where along the route the problem starts. Command prefix trace:
About the Traceroute
Trace the route from ProbeKit’s server to a host, hop by hop, with round-trip times.
FAQ
- Why do some hops show * * *?
- Routers that rate-limit or ignore traceroute probes; it is only a problem if every hop after it is missing too.
- Why does latency jump and then drop?
- Routers answer probes at low priority, so one slow hop followed by fast ones is usually harmless.
